Sub Urban Legends: Work by Justin Plakas and Jessica Wohl

When: Tuesdays-Saturdays, 5-8 p.m. Continues through July 30 2011
Tonight’s opening for Sub Urban Legends introduces new faces to the Hillsboro Village Art Walk. Jessica Wohl is a visiting assistant professor of art at The University of the South in Sewanee. As the show title indicates, Wohl’s recent work is focused on the theme of suburbia. Wohl reworks and recontextualizes familiar elements of family life to explore themes of honesty versus deception, and openness versus secrecy. Justin Plakas makes art using various media interfaces: film cameras, video cameras, scanners and broken keyboards. His finished portraits, images and videos are often imbued with humor and irreverence. In his own words, the artist likes to include “small pieces of a puzzle hinting towards a greater narrative, and leaving the viewer questioning what they are seeing.” Plakas contributes a video installation to the show.
