Anybody who dismisses all puppets — besides Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, of course — as kids’ stuff ought to get a load of String City, a collaboration between the public library’s Wishing Chair Productions and the Country Music Hall of Fame that premiered this summer. Not only does the production illustrate the consolidation and modernization of the Nashville music industry in broad strokes — no simple task, to be sure — it’s also unexpectedly entertaining and laced with quirky humor. Puppet George Jones is backed by a dangling trio of possums, Reba McEntire has her facial features swapped out like a regular Mrs. Potato Head, and Garth Brooks catches air. Best to leave it at that.
