People’s Branch Theatre climbs aboard the bandwagon celebrating the Mark Twain centenary with this original rock musical based on the icon’s writings. Twain, played here by PBT artistic director Ross Brooks, emerges as the first genuine American celebrity, burdened with dealing with the lasting effects of his notoriety and also sharing his scathing views of the forthcoming problems of the 20th century. The songs are a collaboration between Brooks, Marin Miller and Brooke Bryant, with an assist from an onstage band led by musical director Taylor Jones. Essentially, this is a one-man show with Brooks, under Bryant’s direction, striving to evoke Twain’s humorous, radical, provocative and profound personas. Rated PG-13.
