Stinking Lizaveta at the End

The Stench of a Gnarly Genre Hybrid

The Stench of a Gnarly Genre Hybrid
Yes, Stinking Lizaveta’s Alexi Papadopoulos plays an electric standup bass. And yes, the Philadelphia trio relies heavily on improvisation. But for all that the band is credited for blending metal with jazz—along with post-rock, doom, psychedelia and prog—their music should simply be labeled “raw.” Because once Stinking Lizaveta starts banging out its unpolished racket onstage, you begin to wonder where the comparisons to musicians like Elvin Jones and Robert Fripp come from. That isn’t to say that the band’s sound isn’t a legitimate (or unique) hybrid—only that it isn’t pretty. Where other genre-benders tend to focus on precision, Stinking Lizaveta’s true innovation lies in the messiness the band brings to the various genres it touches.
