Steve Martin at The Ryman

With a Banjo on His Knee

With a Banjo on His Knee
Former wild-and-crazy guy Steve Martin is many things—a comedian, an actor, an author, a director—but if you've read his exceedingly excellent memoir Born Standing Up, you know the man's not a dabbler. A highly skilled picker (and grinner) who's been playing the banjo for nearly 40 years, Martin's joined here by the excellent North Kackalack quintet Steep Canyon Rangers. The Rangers won't blow you up into that high, lonesome air, but they are, instrumentally speaking, one of the tightest young bluegrass bands in recent memory. They should prove a worthy foil—or straight man, if you will—to Martin's finger-plucked flights of fancy.
