Spirited Away

When: Sat., July 5, 10 a.m. 2014
Spirited Away might be the most crowd-pleasing selection of the Belcourt/Frist Center collaboration of cartoons organized on the occasion of the Frist’s Watch Me Move animation exhibit. No other film is as likely to break a kid of his or her all-Frozen diet than the film that many consider Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece — but it’s just as likely to draw a comics-and-art-school crowd eager to see the hand-drawn opulence and idiosyncratic characters. If you haven’t seen it, imagine a contemporary Alice in Wonderland, but with more Japanese-based mythology and radish spirits. The Frist/Belcourt screenings continue all month with kids’ films screening in a 10 a.m. Saturday slot (e.g., a selection of Looney Tunes shorts) and next weekend’s midnight movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the film that awakened and confused the libidos of 8-year-olds the world over when it was released in 1988. Dubbed in English. LAURA HUTSON
