On Sunday, Feb. 19, more than 40 Nashville restaurants will battle it out for the titles of Best Soup, Most Creative Soup and Judge’s Choice at the 13th annual Soup Sunday. One of the city’s most popular food-related events, it offers the ultimate in comfort food while benefiting Our Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides comfort, support and medical help to children who have been sexually abused.
Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., hordes of hungry people, spoons in hand, will gather at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel to sample soups from some of Nashville’s favorite restaurants and check out some of the new names on the dining scene. Among participants are Boscos, Bound’ry, Midtown Café, Sperry’s, The Palm, Pancake Pantry, Tin Angel and Noshville, along with new arrivals Cabana, Bistro 215 and Watermark.
Chef’s Challenge is an Iron Chef-influenced competition that pits five chefs in an on-the-spot cook-off. Hal Holden-Bache of Nick & Rudy’s will be defending his second consecutive crown against Todd Albertson of Sunset Grill, Greg Anderson of Sodexho, Michael Carey of Lorraine’s at the Franklin Marriott and Julio Orantes of The Chef’s Place. Preceding the pros are teams of aspiring chefs from local high-school culinary programs.
Soup Sunday ladles out plenty of kid-friendly entertainment like clowns, a ventriloquist, a magician, a balloon artist and Hassan Kavari, a vegetable carver. While the kids are being amused, their parents can indulge the senses in a silent auction of wine and food packages, spa and travel certificates, and sports memorabilia.
