Songwriter's Night Benefit for Sylvan Park Elementary School

Papa Don't Preach

Papa Don't Preach
These guys got the gig partly for a non-musical reason: they all have kids who attend Sylvan Park Elementary, and the school happens to have an auditorium in need of updating. Beyond that—and the plain fact that they’re all veteran singers and songwriters—these four really couldn’t be more different. There’s Matthew Ryan (gruff murmurer and sensitive, shadowed folk-rocker, who just digitally released his new album Dear Lover), Jeff Black (poetic, pensive heartland philosopher, and pioneer of monthly music subscriptions and a campaign for fan sponsorship of his new album), Jonathan Yudkin (session banjo player, mandolinist and fiddler—or violinist, as the occasion dictates— and former leader of the Zappa-esque Chainsmoking Altarboys) and Radney Foster (earnest, red-blooded, strongly melodic and proudly Texan, fresh off his gospel-influenced effort Revival). No word on whether they’ll be in-the-round, playing separate sets or backing each other—but the latter could make for one interesting mix.
