If you walk out of this Stanley Donen-Gene Kelly extravaganza feeling anything other than helium-headedready to whistle and toe-step blithely through whatever monsoon life sends your way--it's safe to say musicals just aren't your bag. Sure, the Nacio Herb Brown-Arthur Freed songs and production numbers are dynamite (even the "Broadway Melody" fantasia, which punctures Kelly's An American in Paris ambitions with a riotous punchline). But the affectionate kidding of Hollywood's bumpy transition to talkies stands up just as beautifully, especially Jean Hagen's venal bubblehead Lina Lamont and her tire-deflating voice. Take your pick of show-stopping moments, from Donald O'Connor's daredevil "Make 'Em Laugh" workout to Kelly and O'Connor's jaw-dropping "Fit as a Fiddle" routine--but it's that evergreen title number that sends people home skipping through puddles.
Mondays, Fridays-Sundays. Starts: April 17. Continues through April 20, 2009
