“Remember when mama used to hitcha with the belt? Shoot. You all, ‘Not the buckle, Mama! Just don’t hit me with the buckle!’ Man. Parents these days are afraid to hit they kids. It’s true! And what’s with kids and the video games?” All right. So that was my best attempt at a Sinbad bit, circa 1993 — you know, that tricky period in The ’Bad’s career between A Different World and Houseguest, when he really shone his brightest? Since losing his foothold as the nation’s foremost flat-topped, neon track-suited, clean clown of the comedic stage, Sinbad has seen some rough days. He filed Chapter 7 back in 2009, and shortly thereafter he was dismissed from The Celebrity Apprentice after just two episodes. However, Sinbad also made a cameo as himself (alongside a sketchy, tweaked-out Rob Thomas) in an especially hilarious and surreal episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in late 2008 that, if nothing else, showed us one thing: He may not be at the top of the comedy world anymore, but he has a sense of humor about himself. Also, last time he passed through Nashville, he hit the smaller Zanies stage. Who knows? Maybe The ’Bad’s comeback is already under way.
