Simon Joyner w/Cortney Tidwell & Whisperer

When: Mon., Aug. 4, 7 p.m. 2014
You know that list of missed opportunities that you mostly forgot about, because getting another chance was so unlikely? It’s a good week to dust that off, considering that Simon Joyner is playing an intimate house show in town for the second time in a calendar year. The Omaha native set a high bar for singer-songwriters in the post-grunge era; It was a big deal for the late BBC Radio DJ John Peel to play a single track from your record on his show, and he aired Joyner’s sophomore album The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll in its entirety. In the 20 years since, Joyner has offered disc after disc of piercing portraits that come by comparisons to Cohen, Van Zandt and Dylan honestly. As if that wasn’t enticing enough, Cortney Tidwell also performs. The sneak preview we recently got of her forthcoming LP Clandestine showed the local luminary in top form, gracefully blending the ethereal and the brutal in an electro-psychedelic swirl. Sam T. Smith, who shares his lonesome tunes under the name Whisperer, rounds out the bill. STEPHEN TRAGESER
