SIMO and the East Side Gamblers

When: Fri., May 16, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $5
Any excuse to see this foundation-rattling power trio is a good one. Guitarist JD Simo and crew party like it’s 1969, channeling Hendrix, The Who and Zeppelin but somehow sounding fresh and urgent. If you need more motivation, this show will be a bittersweet farewell to founding member Frank Swart, one of the most creative and demented bass players this city has ever seen. Swart and his family are returning to the Bay Area, where they lived before moving to Nashville nine years ago. (They are relocating so that Swart’s 12-year-old son Izzy, a bit of a tech whiz, can attend a special school for gifted kids and be closer to his mentor — Mr. Singularity himself, Ray Kurzweil.) If you’ve never heard Swart play his bass — through an array of pedals that would make most guitarists drool — it’s a thing to behold. The chemistry he shares with Simo and drummer Adam Abrashoff allows them to make spontaneous musical turns that are often dazzling, and this may be your last chance to witness this particular lineup in action, so don’t miss it.
