Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars

When: Wed., May 14, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $18
Back in 2006, a half-full house turned out at The Belcourt for a show folks are still talking about — and not just because Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry showed up halfway through and sat in for the rest of the night. The players may have met in refugee camps in Guinea after fleeing civil war in their native Sierra Leone — they bear scars and missing limbs as testimony to the horrors they witnessed — but their burbling Afro-Caribbean grooves revel in joy, high spirits and snake-hipped rhythms, and frontman Ruben Koroma exudes a force of personality that could dislodge the stubbornest ass from its seat. (This being Nashville, he’ll put that to the test.) They’re currently touring behind a new album, Libation, that celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their debut; go, and you’ll have reason to celebrate too. JIM RIDLEY
