Shameless Self Promotion

Hands on Nashville has done a smart and wonderful thing: It’s made community service fun. HON is best known for its annual Hands on Nashville Day, but it works tirelessly throughout the year to serve people in this city. You have a chance to help out—and have fun—on July 10 at the HON Silent Auction at Sunset Grill.... The Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society continues its Concerts on the Lawn series Sunday at the Belle Meade Plantation with a tribute to the music of bassist Charles Mingus presented by an all-star band featuring Denis Solee, George Tidwell, Jim Hoke and other local jazz musicians.... Speaking of musicians, the annual NAMM summer convention returns to town next week, and the event should be of interest to musicians who love gear. Here’s a bonus: Boardwalk Cafe is registering entrants to win a pair of tickets to the Scene-sponsored NAMM Summer Concert featuring Sevendust. The winner gets tickets to this invitation-only show at Havana Lounge on July 19 and a signed John Connolly Les Paul guitar.... As NAMM gets going, Ocean Way studio is hosting a Vocal Mic Invitational 11 a.m.-6 p.m. July 17; the special hands-on microphone demonstration event is free. For more info, call 320-3900.... Also on July 17, the Cystic Fibrosis Toucan Pre-Party is at the Greenhouse bar, starting at 6 p.m. Turn to p. 40.... Zelda women’s boutique in Nashville has teamed with Graceworks, the Williamson County social service agency, to present a three-day sale to benefit the agency’s thrift store operations. The sale of selected used clothing will be held July 17-19 at the store, 5133 Harding Rd. For information, call 356-2430.... There’s no movie sneak this week. Get your free moviegoing experience at Movies in the Park instead; July 9 is the last installment. Call 244-7989, ext. 650, to find out what’s playing.
