If the Mayans are right, Nashville will most definitely spend the rest of its time on Earth trying to prove to the rest of the world that we’ve got just as much, if not more, rock ’n’ roll in us than they do. But let’s face it — Nashville’s definition of “rock” might be on par with Mississippi’s concept of “literate” — forgiving, at best. As it stands, Memphis will never have that problem. Only Detroit rivals the Bluff City as the epicenter of dirty, raucous rock ’n’ soul for the past 50 years, and we’re at least fortunate to live close enough to get a little dirty ourselves by proximity. Sex Cult is a Memphian supergroup of sorts featuring members of Magic Kids, Bake Sale, Vile Nation and Manatees — and, more importantly, reps Memphis proper with a raw and vicious lo-fi punk ’n’ roll.
