When Ted Jensen first opened OutLoud! Books and Gifts on Church Street 12 years ago, little did he know he was planting the seeds for an entire district of GLBT-friendly establishments. The local GLBT community has come a long way since, and so, thankfully, have the attitudes of many Nashvillians. To coincide with National Coming Out Day, OutLoud!--now co-owned by Jensen's partner Kevin Medley--is sponsoring a grand-opening event for two new Church Street enterprises: REVIVE, a coffeehouse featuring a variety of nonalcoholic beverages, quiches, snacks and baked goods, and OutCentral, Tennessee's first GLBTQIF cultural center. (Surely everyone understands GLBT by now. "Q" is for queer and questioning, "I" for intersex and "F" for friends and family.) OutCentral, the brainchild of Jim Hawk, will be a place where people of all stripes--even ESNWDIs (Enlightened Straight Nashvillians Who Despise Intolerance...kinda catchy, huh?)--can gather, develop friendships and offer support to those finding their way through the sometimes treacherous waters of self-acceptance.
