Save the Jazz

Times are tough. And when times get tough, the axes come out, and the victims felled are too often those that mean the most to us culturally and artistically. As we reported just weeks ago (“Blues for Jazz 89,” Jan. 22), MTSU’s NPR affiliate WMOT—one of the nation’s few remaining 24-hour jazz stations—is facing possible elimination. There is, however, still a chance to save the 40-year-old station, and you can hear some of the best players in town while doing it. The Nashville Jazz Workshop and the Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society present a benefit performance by the acclaimed Nashville Jazz Orchestra, featuring special guests such as Annie Sellick, Connye Florance, Rod Magaha, Mandy Barnett, Victor Wooten and Kirk Whalum. At the risk of sounding PBS-telethon-cheesy, let’s save this Middle Tennessee institution.
