Sarah McLachlan

If the name Sarah McLachlan conjures wrenching images of saucer-eyed dogs held in captivity in dilapidated animal shelters, now’s the time for a solid reminder that Ms. McLachlan remains one of the fundamental female voices in music from the past few decades. In addition to founding all-lady megatour Lilith Fair — a necessary rite of passage for those of us who may have lost our virginity to the strains of Jewel’s Pieces of You — the Canadian songstress has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. Though her most familiar songs hail from those halcyon days of the mid ’90s — “Sweet Surrender,” “Adia,” “Possession,” “I Will Remember You” — she’s still hard at work, providing the theme song for the 2010 Winter Olympics and working with longtime collaborator and producer Pierre Marchand for her latest album, Shine On, which was released in May. And though she’ll always be remembered for her elegant, evocative balladry, the lady has a serious sense of humor, too, exemplified by her hysterical Portlandia appearance as a cleaning lady alongside Aimee Mann.
