The current exhibit at Tinney Contemporary has taken on added cache with the recent, grisly revelations at Smithfield Foods’ Virginia hog farm. A Humane Society undercover investigation revealed that Smithfield’s breeding pigs spent nearly their entire lives immobile, crammed into tiny “gestation crates.” Many of the enclosures were stained with blood from the mouths of the pigs who attempted to gnaw their way to freedom. Smithfield is the largest pork producer in the country, and this animal cruelty scandal will come as no surprise to anyone in the know about the brutality of factory farm practices. Sharon Lee Hart’s
Sanctuary exhibit features portraits of rescued farm animals and aims to raise awareness of their plight. See for yourself before the show closes on New Year’s Day. The gallery is open by appointment during the holidays. Email susan@tinneycontemporary.com.
