In the 1963 B-movie The Raven, producer/director Roger Corman loosely references the Edgar Allan Poe poem of the same title to tell the story of three rival sorcerers played by the terrible trio of Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff. Erin Morgenstern’s new book The Night Circus also spins a yarn about battling magicians — albeit one updated for an audience weaned on Harry Potter and raised on Twilight. We make the comparison because The Night Circus is also a best-seller with a movie deal of its own. The book tells the story of a mysterious circus that appears in random nighttime locations around the world. Amidst its weird wonders, Morgenstern weaves a spellbinding teen romance into the star-crossed fates of her competitive conjurers.
