Whether it’s your jazz or banjo itch that needs scratching, you’ll want to check out banjo phenom Ryan Cavanaugh, who brings a stellar band and a brand-new album to The 5 Spot tonight. A contest-winning picker of edgy but convincing bluegrass, Cavanaugh was drafted by jazz sax man Bill Evans into his Soulgrass fusion group a few years ago, and the experience stuck. The new self-titled release delivers five strong compositions that show a tight ensemble that can weave a diverse set of textures, from the contemplative “Ballad of Edgar Boon,” to some hard blowing toward the end of the opening “Grand Dragon.” And while it’s fair to point to better-known banjoists Béla Fleck and Alison Brown as predecessors, make no mistake: Cavanaugh’s got his own voice, and a fine, sympathetic band to back him. Also appearing, genre busters Guthrie Trapp & Friends, and Hindugrass.
