Heres a prime example of gross understatement: The folk singer-songwriter field isnt exactly packed with female African-American performers. If Tracy Chapman is the only one who readily comes to mind, theres another dreadlocked, acoustic guitar-wielding singer-songwriter whos every bit as worth knowing: Ruthie Foster. You figure Foster has probably had to field a few drunken requests for Fast Car and Give Me One Reason along the way (on her live album Stages she tells a story about being mistaken for Chapman), but her blend of Texas folk, blues, gospel and soul (she incorporated the latter into her repertoire last year with her Wurlitzer-rich, southern soul-steeped album, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster) has a lived-in wisdom and a warm, welcoming vibe all its own.
