Battle of the bands competitions are, more often than not, simple charades of hopelessly deluded bands going head-to-head in a sad bout, the sole purpose of which is exploiting the ignis fatuus of the struggling musician. BMI and Mercy Lounge’s Road to Bonnaroo 8 off 8th series is a different story altogether. Instead of unknown acts scrimmaging in vain for bogus prizes, this event—which happens on the third Monday for the three months preceding Bonnaroo—features top-tier bands from our plentiful pool of local talent competing for a chance to play the nation’s largest music festival. One act will be chosen from each of three installments. The first round sees hometown heroes The Features on their way to Manchester, while this round will likely be a dead heat between local “Killers” AutoVaugh, new-wave fetishists How I Became the Bomb, Megaman-tastic cult phenomenon The Protomen, the ever-darling Those Darlins, future hit paraders Pico vs. Island Trees and our pick for Sea Biscuit-like glory, indie underdogs And the Relatives. Dark-horses Reno Bo will make their presence known while newcomers Mike’s Pawn Shop will try and justify their befuddling existence. A combination of ballots collected from audience members and judges will decide the winner.
