Rites of Spring feat. Steve Aoki, Delta Rae, twenty one pilots, Ace Hood, Smallpools & more

When: Fri., April 11, 4 p.m. 2014
Price: $40-$60
Glancing at past lineups for Vanderbilt’s annual spring music festival is like cracking open a pop-culture time capsule: Blues Traveler and Smashing Pumpkins headlined 1994, Nelly in 2001, and despite some cancellations due to Mother Nature getting crunk, the show went on with Drake in 2010 and Kid Cudi in 2011. This year’s roster follows suit, aimed squarely at contemporary tastes with a healthy mix of electronic dance music, hip-hop and indie pop. Atlanta rapper and Grammy nominee 2 Chainz tops the bill Friday with cuts from his swaggering, chart-topping sophomore LP B.O.A.T.S. II: #METIME. Steve Aoki, who closes out Saturday night with a DJ set, has been throwing dance parties (and cake — lots of cake) since the early ’90s, and his Dim Mak Records label continues to shape the face of EDM by putting its weight behind promising young talent. There’s a strong undercard as well, including Los Angeles’ massive AM-pop troupe The Mowgli’s, North Carolina folksters Delta Rae, and Cherub, our own merry pranksters of smooth R&B.
