There’s nothing particularly fancy about Radney Foster’s new re-creation of his 1992 solo debut,
Del Rio TX, 1959, but that’s as it should be — the Texas native sounds as relaxed as a man singing on his back porch. Yet
Del Rio, Texas Revisited: Unplugged and Lonesome doesn’t come across as a trip down memory lane, even given the built-in nostalgia of the original work. Cut quickly in Texas with a group of musicians including guitarist Jon Randall Stewart,
Unplugged and Lonesome benefits from its looseness — Foster decided against extensive rehearsals and recorded most of the collection live in the studio. Longtime fans of the 1992 record may note that Foster’s singing has picked up grit, while listeners who come to the unplugged version with fresh ears will find its slowed-down tempos and reflective tone appropriate for a singer who has survived with charm and verve intact.
