Nicole Kidman received nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award — incidentally, she lost all three to
Black Swan’s Natalie Portman — for her moving role in the 2010 film adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The story — a “perceptive and poignant study in the day-to-day aches of bereavement” — centers on Howie and Becca, two grief-stricken parents struggling to bear the weight of the world after the death of their toddler Danny. The overall melancholic tone is, however, peppered with bits of comedy that bring a deeper level of meaning to this sober portrait of loss. Leah Fincher and Justin Hand star in a cast that also includes Meg Davis, Connie Bryant and David Bennett.
