Few things in the western world are as ubiquitous and polarizing as Christmas music is come wintertime. And for musical acts of all stripes (save for maybe Marilyn Manson), sleigh bell-laden yuletide releases are never inconceivable. Even if they’re coming courtesy of Brett Rosenberg, an East Nashville Jew who specializes in penning and self-producing smart-alecky lo-fi power-pop nuggets. Under his Quichenight stage name, Rosenberg is spreading holiday cheer, showing Christmas in Norman Rockwell’s America for the secular celebration it is with the release of his debut Christmas EP A Very Quichey Christmas. Since Christmas music is hopelessly unavoidable, it’s recommended you embrace the best gems and jams the genre has to offer, as opposed to fighting it, ya grinch. And, given Very Quichey’s merrily depressive navel-gaze into the more misanthropic, nefarious side of Christmas, if you are indeed the Grinch incarnate, this four-tracks-on-four-track is just the rocking stocking stuffer for you. While Christmas 2011 has now come and gone, one can only assume that Quichenight will musically relive its Santastic dark times at tonight’s 5 Spot performance.
