The hit television show of the summer, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, in which a team of five dedicated gay men each week remake the look and lifestyle of a fashion-deficient straight man, is about to have a local counterpart involving the Metro Council.

Sources say WSMV-Channel 4 is developing a local version of the show that would take the same idea and apply it to male members of Metro Council. The show, to be called Gay Eyes on the Council Guys, is recruiting its cast now, with posters in gay bars and an upcoming ad in the gay and lesbian newspaper Out & About Nashville.

“What we’re looking for,” says a source at the television station, “are five gay men who have expertise in different aspects of lifestyle, such as clothing, decorating or hairstyle.

“Face it—when you come across a council meeting on television, it’s truly striking how fashion-impaired the average Metro councilman is. This is our effort at correcting that problem while having a little fun.”

Not all council members are taken with the idea of getting a lifestyle makeover.

“I didn’t vote for the anti-bias bill for gays and lesbians, and I’m not about to have some bunch of guys come in and tell me my shirts are out of style or that I ought to get some new trendy couch at Pottery Barn,” one council member says.

Former council member Charles French’s failure to win a seat in the at-large race last week was a disappointment to the show’s producers. French, an affable guy who is nevertheless not notable for his fashion savvy, had already agreed to be made over on the show if he were elected.

“It would have been great television, but we will go on,” the WSMV source says. “We have [Metro director of cultural affairs] John Bridges as a consultant, we have an entire new council to work with, and we’re ready to go.”

But, the source says, a female version of the show, in which local lesbians would do makeovers on councilwomen, has been scrapped. “We just can’t afford to buy Subaru Outbacks for every woman on the council.”
