We’re getting rather annoyed with these rising gas prices. In fact, you want to know the only thing more annoying than the cost of a fill-up these days? It’s the Tim McGraw support-the-troops ballad “If You’re Reading This.” To our ears, he’s saying “readin’ nis.” We’re aware that part of the country music genre is folksy elocution (John Anderson’s “Swingin’” comes to mind), but doesn’t Tim go a little overboard here? Some of you might wonder why we at Public Art would criticize a song about a soldier dying in battle just after Veterans Day. Sorry, but we believe in nuance, and finding fault with Tim’s diction doesn’t change our wholehearted support for the troops. Just like our questioning of U.S. energy policy is independent of our questioning the U.S. Iraq war policy. Nuance.
