Public Art Dedication: Ken Rowe
Not all art lives in museums, and when art extends into public space it gets magnified, touched and encountered in ways that sequestered frames never do. So we’re grateful for the Percent for Art program, which puts 1 percent of capital bonds toward such things. Joining the glassy, abstracted figures of “Citizen” on the Public Square will be “Exploration & Discovery” — three bronze and granite works that sculptor Ken Rowe says represent “the active pursuit of exploration and the application of knowledge gained through exploration and discovery.” Rowe taught at Belmont and Watkins before relocating to San Antonio, and these sculptures, titled “The Spark of Discovery,” “The Scholar” and “To the Moon,” will remind visitors to the square to be on the lookout for the new and the unexpected — like a one-third scale set of nine telescopes, some pointed at various Nashville landmarks and others at the heavens, for instance.
