When the public learned 45 years ago that songwriting team Burt Bacharach and Hal David were entering the world of Broadway, there was at least some minimal skepticism. Could the guys who churned out lovely — if somewhat formulaic — ballads and up-tempo pop hits achieve the stylistic diversity and drama usually expected of musical theater? Well, the duo wrote their kind of music — inescapably tuneful, richly harmonic — with at least a dozen of the songs qualifying as immediately engaging, appropriately funny or downright moving. (Really, there are too many gems to mention, but the title tune and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” gained popular stand-alone status after the show opened.) It didn’t hurt that the production’s source material was Billy Wilder’s great flick The Apartment, as adapted by Neil Simon — or that its leading man was the post-Fantasticks, pre-Lennie Briscoe Jerry Orbach. Interest should be high in this new Boiler Room Theatre staging, which stars two very familiar local players: Megan Murphy Chambers and Patrick Kramer. It will be of additional interest to see if the BRT rendition follows the updates from the 2010 Broadway revival — mainly, interpolating a couple of Bacharach-David catalog favorites (“I Say a Little Prayer” and ”A House Is Not a Home”) into the score.
