The Privates appreciation for the cream of the indie-rock crop is well-documented: Their performance as the backing band for Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser on a song at The Basement last October received national coverage. Their latest EP Motion, however, is rife with nods to rock n roll greats of yesteryear. Songs like You Never Take Me Dancing and The Breeze reveal a likely admiration for Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and The Clash, and their asymmetrical, sharp pop is as punk-infused as it is infectious. The Privates powerhouse of a rhythm section provides sturdy legs for frontman Dave Paulsons frenetic melodies and sideman Ryan Norris key and lead guitar flourishes. Perhaps most importantly, Motion captures the energy of The Privates raucous live show without sacrificing polish. Fellow indie-pop troubadours Hotpipes and Tristen open.
