Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Not “Dixieland,” thank you very much, the Pres Hall Band returned to, uh, tooting its own horn in the studio last year after a couple collaborations with a wide variety of (mostly) roots music artists like the Del McCoury Band. 2013’s That’s It didn’t eschew collaboration altogether — My Morning Jacket’s Jim James signed on as co-producer — but it presented the group’s first all-original set without any guests, and the exercise showed just how limiting that “Dixieland” label is. There is, to be sure, some of the glorious heterophony that’s characteristic of the music’s earliest days, but there’s plenty of scrupulously arranged ensemble stuff too, and more spirit and ebullience than you can shake a stick at. This is, to put it simply, quintessential American art, as suitable for the Schermerhorn as any symphony — and livelier than a good many of them.
