Potty Humor and American Nostalgia at Blackbird Tattoo

Lift the Lid

Lift the Lid
Jeff Bertrand’s American Nostalgia includes painted portraits of music icons like Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys. Most of Bertrand's heroes transcend musicianship and popular fame, affecting audiences at a primal level. Speaking of primal, Ben Johnson's collection of toilet seat paintings, titled Potty Humor: A Study of the End, explores that activity we engage in when we aren't—most of us, anyway—eating, drinking or having sex. Funny and punny, Johnson's scatological scrawlings appeal to the fifth grader in all of us and these rebus puzzle renderings will have you staring at two fingers squeezing a dark hunk of bread before an “A-ha!” moment finds you exclaiming “Pinch a loaf!” at the top of your lungs. It's OK. It's the holidays.
