Phone Whore

When: Thursdays, Fridays, 8 p.m. Continues through Nov. 11 2011
Phone: 776-4003
Price: $10
Cameryn Moore is a phone sex operator. She’s taken that experience and turned it into a one-woman play that’s both over-the-top and down to earth, sweet and obscene. Phone Whore pulls the curtain back from phone sex’s aural peep show — like the unexpected final shot of Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion video, Moore takes her calls while lounging in comfy PJs, slippers and a robe. The audience hears only her side of the phone sex conversation — lewd, graphic and completely frank. But between calls, Moore directs her monologues to the audience, sharing interesting observations about what it’s really like to do that kind of work, and what our turn-ons say about us. Among clips of the play on YouTube, one particularly interesting insight is that men frequently hang up after phone sex without saying goodbye, as if Moore and the conversation they’d had were “just another sex toy.” The audience spends part of their time listening to this totally engaging woman describe the sordid details of her private professional life with honesty and insight, while the other part is spent like a fly on the wall of the sex industry, rapt in awkward, titillated silence. Her work has won several awards at various fringe festivals, including Best Female Solo Performance at the 2010 San Francisco Fringe Festival, and Best of Fest at the 2011 Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Let’s see what kind of reception this kind of smart, edgy, super-sexual work garners in the Bible Belt. As Moore herself says, “You can’t argue with a turn-on.”
