Phillis Levin and Kate Gleason Signing and Reading at APSU

Poetry Doubleheader

Poetry Doubleheader
Kate Gleason’s Measuring the Dark is the winner of the 2008 First Book Award for Poetry sponsored by Austin Peay’s Zone 3 Press. Phillis Levin, who served as judge for the competition, will join Gleason for a joint reading to celebrate the book’s release. Gleason explores a broad range of themes in Measuring the Dark, from the workings of the cosmos to a child’s first awareness of war. The uncertainties of science and feeling often merge in the poems, as in “The Velocity of Love”: “On the scale we’re now talking, / we know nothing is solid, / matter riddled with the fretwork / of subatomic tumult.” Phillis Levin is the author of four books of poetry, including Mercury and May Day. Her work has been featured in The New Yorker and The Atlantic.
