Elvis Presley was the King of Rock 'n' Roll, no doubt, but he was also a great anti-auteur whose career lacked the kind of direction that significant artists are supposed to have in spades. Elvis filmed Clambake in 1967 while The Beatles recorded Sgt. Pepper's, and that probably pleased Presley's long-time manager, Colonel Tom Parker. A shrewd show-business veteran by the time he began his stewardship of Elvis in 1955, Parker is routinely blamed for the interminable movies, skewed song selection and general air of listlessness Elvis displayed throughout most of the '60. It's a remarkable story, and Presley biographer Peter Guralnick will try to shed some light on this strange partnership--which did, after all, produce both Clambake and "Kentucky Rain."
