Passion Pit w/Pacific Air

When: Mon., Sept. 17, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $25-$28
If we’re reliving the ’80s (and you know this much is true), then Massachusetts quintet Passion Pit is the modern day corollary for Pet Shop Boys. Both make plush synth pop that overflows with melodic hooks, dance beats and surprising grace. The project arose out of an EP Michael Angelakos made for his then-girlfriend. One thing led to another, and suddenly Columbia Records was interested in releasing their 2009 full-length debut Manners (in partnership with indie label Frenchkiss). Angelakos’ multi-tracked tenor swoops and soars, cutting broad elegant figures above the swirling keyboards. His vocals are even more willowy and the arrangements more grandiose on the appropriately titled follow-up, Gossamer. Like Red Bull, the energy’s indomitable and sickly sweet, dripping with sentimental treacle that’s a holdover from its romantic beginnings. But Angelakos knows how to give his pop a lively, infectious indie-tronic bustle.
