Parting Gifts

When: Thu., Sept. 23, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $5
Ettes frontwoman Coco Hames observed in a recent interview, “I really listen to the same 50 records over and over again, really. Stooges. Stones. Dave Clark Five. Beatles '65. Sabbath. Patsy Cline. Carl Perkins.” If so, Greg Cartwright is the perfect bandmate to help her pay homage to such iconic influences without sounding like a parody or an oldies act. The Memphis-born musician, who recorded The Ettes’ Do You Want Power, has been playing some of the most well-crafted, heartfelt garage/punk/soul/country-influenced music around, crafting heartbreak laments and punk stompers for The Oblivians and Reigning Sound. The Ettes have earned raves more recently for their sweet vocals and dangerously tough, fuzzy sound. The two have teamed up with recently relocated Black Keys vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach, Ettes dummer Poni Silver and others in the new band Parting Gifts, whose first album is out Oct. 2 on In the Red. Expect expertly crafted songs played with wild abandon.
