Paper Bird w/South Rail

When: Thu., May 8, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $7
In much the same way the classic production teams of the 1960s used string arrangements to support pop songs, Paper Bird parlays its rootsy influences into a seamless blend that allows songcraft to shine through as its main ingredient. Yes, the Denver septet features banjo side-by-side with trombone, and draws freely from styles that have become mile-high stereotypes, including folk, bluegrass and old-timey rag textures. But underneath the visible style markings, Paper Bird — a group that features two pairs of siblings and bountiful harmonies layered four-deep — shows exceptional agility and cleverness when it comes to songwriting. At times, Paper Bird taps into the timeless, universal appeal of the breezy ’70s West Coast pop that for good reason (i.e., impeccable song construction) endures on AM radio to this day.
