Paintings of Kelly Kerrigan at The Belcourt

Beak to the Future
The paintings of Kelly Kerrigan are some of the most entertaining works to grace the walls of The Belcourt in recent memory. Kelly is probably best known for making signature lamps out of lingerie with her company, Tramp Lamps, but her paintings showcase her sense of humor as well as her fine stroke. I don’t want to call them “animal portraits” or “caricatures” or “cartoon paintings,” so I’ll just describe my favorite: It’s a line up of five finches decked out in the many outfits worn by Michael J. Fox throughout the Back to the Future trilogy. They’re even funny-looking finches apart from their outfits. Birds do provide a natural stupefied expression, but I get the impression that if she painted an apple it would be a funny-looking apple. Images of her work can be viewed at Kellykerrigan.blogspot.com.
