Open Mike Eagle feat. Corporate Juggernaut & Black Cat Sylvester

When: Sun., Aug. 31, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: free
In many ways, Open Mike Eagle is the everyman of intellectual hip-hop. But to reduce his act to just another relatable dude with an ear for rhythm would be to greatly underestimate his novelty. There’s a subtle humor that’s integral to his artistry, but it’s his ability to blur the lines between comedy and hip-hop, between music and performance, that makes Open Mike’s voice unique. The titles of his first two records, Unapologetic Art Rap and Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes, show the grim self-awareness that might be one of his greatest assets. Open Mike’s music is anxiety-ridden and ultimately obsessed with the ego’s relation to the outside world, and all the external pressures that go along with it. The way he uses this motif to paint the narrative of the MC’s relation to his audience — or of a person of color’s relation to the outside world and its expectations — has a type of rebound effect that allows you to relate to his music on an infinite amount of levels. As someone who is equally present in L.A.’s underground comedy and hip-hop scenes, Open Mike is a diverse voice with a diverse palette. Local comedians from the Corporate Juggernaut collective Gary Fletcher, Alex Poloskey and Sean Parrott will open. ITORO UDOKO
