When I was growing up in Detroit, I loved Big Bird. He was famous on Sesame Street, and he was also associated with the Detroit Tigers’ star rookie pitcher Mark “The Bird” Fidrych, whose unruly locks resembled Big Bird’s feathered cabesa. Fidrych died young last year, but Big Bird is still with us, and this new planetarium program reminds kids of all ages that we have more in common to celebrate than we have conflicts to separate us. Elmo and his Chinese pal Hu Hu Zhu are also along for the ride. There’s even talk of naming a star for Fidrych. That last part’s not true, but with all this star talk, I figured I’d make a wish. Call 862-5177 for info about tickets and Spanish and Chinese language programs.
