So, I have this theory about Of Montreal. It came to me around this time last year, while watching Kevin Barnes and his art school cronies turn Mercy Lounge in a lusty pop dungeon in their annual stop in town. It was probably the sixth time I had seen them, even though returns had diminished to basically nil since first seeing their magical mystery tour in ’04. My theory is that Of Montreal is indie rock’s
Rocky Horror Picture Show. They’re a band that’s almost too easy to get into when you’re young and weird, offering the kind of freaky psych pop that scares parents and allures pop music miscreants. But once you pass the age of 22, you either start planning costumes for their gigs or move on to bigger and better bands. Prepare yourself for an art show spectacle that’s about as baffling as it is Prince-like. But that’s what makes it cool, right?
