Oedipus the King at the Parthenon

When Ignorance Is Bliss

When Ignorance Is Bliss
Noted director John Holleman returns to Music City with yet another of his mask-theater stagings of the classics. This time it’s Sophocles’ timeless tale of the vengeful king of Thebes, who—flying in the face of onerous prophecy—seeks his father’s murderer and pays the ultimate price. The production is at the Parthenon in Centennial Park, where Holleman’s company has previously performed Medea (2005), Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses (2006) and Antigone (2007). Three actors—John Malden, Jacqueline Springfield and Richard Browder—will cover all the play’s roles while periodically offering sidebars to the audience about Greek theater, mask work and the mythology surrounding the Oedipus story.
Thursdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Nov. 13. Continues through Nov. 21, 2009
