Not If They Were the Last Massacre on Earth

When you title the first track on your new record “Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mills’ Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House),” it’s pretty safe to say that you’re trying to get attention in the worst way possible. But it’s that kind of any-press-is-good-press attitude that has led to the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s infamy. Ondi Timoner’s 2005 rock-doc DIG! immortalized the antics of volatile bandleader Anton Newcombe and his rotating cast of heavenly strung-out misfits in their catastrophic venture into pseudo-stardom. It seems Newcombe’s grand scheme—if indeed he does have one—is to seduce your curiosity through the nefarious shenanigans only to blow you away with his “genius.” Having started out as a band whose sole mission was to pay homage to the lore of psychedelic ’60s counter-culture, Brian Jonestown Massacre have ended up adding their own chapter to the story of California bohemia. Or maybe it’s an epilogue…or a eulogy.
