First order of business: Erase the image of Gone With the Wind from your mind as you envision the fashions on display at this whirlwind exhibit of mid-1800s clothing. Unlike the high glamour of the inspired costume design shown in that film, this exhibit shows actual pieces worn by actual Civil War-era folks. This 300-item collection — thought to be the largest private haul of its kind — is up from Atlanta just for a weekend, but it promises a crash-course in the lessons of the buttoned-up structure and formality of the day. For women, that meant a fierce competition for Most Exaggerated Asset featuring the corset v. the bustle. For men, that meant top hats and dusters and high collars, oh my — not to mention neckties whose myriad arrangements could rival any French woman's scarves. There are some 15 dresses on display here, alongside bonnets, shawls and assorted accoutrement, and 10 men's garments, plus a wealth of old daguerreotypes, carte-de-vistes and tintypes.
