Nomo at Mercy Lounge

No Mo' Drum Circles

No Mo' Drum Circles
Not unlike their cousin band His Name Is Alive, NOMO has steadily floundered between obscurity and a healthy amount of veteran's credence for their consistency over the last five years. A progressive hybrid of electro-lounge IDM and what began as classic—even reverently authentic—Afro-beat funk, this Ann Arbor, Mich., collective is truly out on a wavelength all their own as they combine the diverse input of approximately nine core members. Since their 2004 debut, said to have incorporated more than 60 contributors, NOMO's evolution through various world-beat musics and the improvisational approach known as M-Base has made them a critical pet of sorts. But listeners who don’t know their sundry influences needn’t worry: what's kept this fringe co-op so oddly compelling are the grit and visceral energy that spring from those sources.
