The biggest awards show in country music, sponsored by the Country Music Association (CMA), may hitch its wagons and head to New York for a year. Typically the show broadcasts from Nashville and includes a week’s worth of lavish parties. The economic benefit to the cityin hotel rooms, catering, restaurant billsis huge. But the CMA contends that moving the show to New York would bring additional viewers to the country genre, not to mention more financial sponsors. A decision is expected soon.
State museum assessing damage
A Red Grooms mural and personal belongings of former President Andrew Johnson are among the items in the Tennessee State Museum that have been damaged as a result of construction at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). The Tennessean reports that the damage could run as high as $2 million. A broken sprinkler and various other construction mishaps have meant countless items in the museum collection are wet, coated in dust or otherwise harmed. The museum is located underneath the TPAC lobby.
Newsman busted
Bracey Campbellformer managing editor of the Nashville Banner and former publisher of The Brentwood Journalhas been charged with writing bad checks in Maury County and with fraud in Williamson County. He also recently presented himself as a writer for Southern Living when he stayed for several days in a North Carolina hotel, although that claim was so dubious he was arrested and charged with fraud.
Sports update
Both Vanderbilt University and the Tennessee Titans head into the maw. Vanderbilt faces Georgia Tech on Saturday and must then begin readying itself for a long list of big, beefy Southeastern Conference foes. As for the Titans, the team travels to Pittsburgh, which isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. It must then play New England on the road. Of the Titans’ next five games, four are away.
