Is a better economy on the way?

At the same time stock markets are rallying, a poll released by Middle Tennessee State University and published in The Tennessean shows that consumers in the Nashville area are pumped about the economy. To the critical question of whether now is a good time to buy a home, 85 percent of the respondents answered yes. Not since November 2000 have so many people answered yes to that question. The poll was asked of 268 residents of Davidson, Rutherford and Williamson counties.

Affirmative action affirmed

Most people seemed to take the Supreme Court’s decision this week about affirmative action in stride. Local colleges and universities predicted no great upheaval in the way they admit students. On a more theoretical level, what seemed so refreshing from the court was its general belief that it’s important for people of different races and ethnicities to interact with one another. As Justice Sandra Day O’Connor wrote, “Cross-racial understanding helps to break down racial stereotypes.” The Supremes did say, however, that point systems used to automatically grade minority college applicants higher than non-minorities must be stopped. But they hastened to say that minority students could nonetheless be favored. Thus, the great racial debate in America completes another chapter.

Titans watch

Just about everyone who follows the Titans was sickened by the announcement from top team brass that Randall Godfrey was being bounced from the squad. An amazing linebacker who once led the team in tackles for two years running, Godfrey was released so the team could sign a punter, back-up quarterback and center. Early this week, Seattle signed Godfrey to a one-year contract. The Titans will miss him.

Summer now here

According to the calendar, it’s officially summer. Meaning heat, humidity, road mirages, homemade ice cream, body odor, fresh tomatoes, poison ivy, blender-based cocktails, heat stroke, vacations at the lake house, fireworks exploding in your hand, Congress in recess, cuties at the swimming pool, mosquitoes in your ear, and so on.
